CHOOSING A HOSPICE SERVICE

The first thing we tell people is that turning to hospice does not mean giving up. People who choose hospice often live longer and more comfortably. Our passion for hospice ministry is fueled by the desire to see patients met with a tangible expression of love, hope and compassion during one of life’s most vulnerable stages. Guided by the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Providers, we serve people of all faiths as they navigate the joys and sorrows experienced at end of life.

These are the questions we hear the most, and likely are some of the first things you want to know when you're seeking hospice care.

  • Q. Who pays for Hospice care?

    A. Hospice care is a covered benefit under Medicare A, Medicaid, HMOs and many private insurance companies. Coverage generally includes team visitation, medications, equipment and supplies related to the terminal condition.

  • Q. Am I choosing to give up when I choose hospice?

    A. Absolutely not. Numerous studies have shown that people who choose hospice over-aggressive treatment can actually live longer and more comfortably.

  • Q. What does the Catholic faith say about hospice?

    A. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2278 Discontinuing medical procedures that are burdensome, dangerous, extraordinary, or disproportionate to the expected outcome can be legitimate; it is the refusal of “over-zealous” treatment. Here one does not will to cause death; one’s inability to impede it is merely accepted. The decisions should be made by the patient if he is competent and able or, if not, by those legally entitled to act for the patient, whose reasonable will and legitimate interests must always be respected.

2279 Even if death is thought imminent, the ordinary care owed to a sick person cannot be legitimately interrupted. The use of painkillers to alleviate the suffering of the dying, even at the risk of shortening their days, can be morally in conformity with human dignity if death is not willed as either an end or a means, but only foreseen and tolerated as inevitable. Palliative care is a special form of disinterested charity. As such it should be encouraged. If you would like more information about this, please contact us at 913.621.5090.

  • Q. When should I consider hospice?

    A. Usually, this is a conversation that most patients or caregivers have with their doctor. An evaluation can be ordered to see if hospice care would be appropriate. Then we can work with your doctor to see if hospice would be a benefit for you and your loved one.
